Sen. Rand Paul to Newsmax TV: Impeachment 'Dead on Arrival'

(Newsmax TV's "Greg Kelly Reports")

By    |   Tuesday, 26 January 2021 09:06 PM EST

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., called former President Donald Trump's impeachment "dead on arrival," telling Newsmax TV there was no way Democrats would get the two-thirds of the Senate necessary to convict.

Paul's resolution, which essentially called any trial unconstitutional, failed 55-45 on Tuesday, but he noted the 45 Republicans who voted for his measure shows any further action is mere theater.

"The impeachment is dead; it's dead on arrival," Paul told "Greg Kelly Reports." "It takes 67 votes. The Democrats could only muster 55 votes – 50 Democrats and five Republicans who decided to vote with the Democrats – but they don't have nearly enough.

"And the thing is, this divides the country. It doesn't unify anything. So, [President Joe] Biden either means he wants to unify the country, or he's just playing games with us."

Paul went on to insinuate the Democrats as hypocrites, referencing a Bernie Sanders 2016 presidential campaign volunteer who shot at Republicans during a congressional baseball practice in 2017. The shooter, James Hodgkinson, apparently incensed at Republicans and Trump's policies and who belonged to a Facebook group called "Terminate the Republican Party," critically wounded Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., the GOP House Whip.

He compared the charge Trump incited the violence and breach of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 to Democrats' characterization at the time Republicans' legislative proposal on healthcare was "you get sick and then you die."

"Well, that to me, sounds like if you have a sick young one, or a kid, or somebody who has leukemia and they might die, that Republicans want your child to die," Paul told host Greg Kelly. "It sounds like the kind of language that would incite violence. And it set this man off. But not one Republican said 'Oh, Bernie Sanders is responsible.' Not one Republican said 'Oh, we should impeach Bernie Sanders, or censure Bernie Sanders.'

"So, I think these people are small people, very small people, pathetic, very bitter, and what they're doing to the country is a terrible travesty."
