CIA Happy to See 'Homeland' Character Gone

By    |   Sunday, 05 April 2015 08:12 PM EDT

Claire Danes’ "Homeland" character Carrie Mathison won't be working for the CIA when the new season premieres, and no one could be happier than real female CIA agents, New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd reports.

"The CIA sisterhood is fed up with the flock of fictional CIA women in movies and on TV who guzzle alcohol as they bed hop and drone drop, acting crazed and emotional, sleeping with terrorists and seducing assets," Dowd wrote on Saturday.

Female CIA agents are typically portrayed by Hollywood in a one-dimensional fashion, agent Gina Bennett told Dowd.

"Whatever the character flaw is, that’s all they are," Bennett said.

"I wish they wouldn’t use centerfold models in tight clothes. We don’t look that way. And we don’t act that way," agreed retired agent Sandra Grimes.

But one retired covert officer named Meredith admitted that Middle Eastern men often are attracted to American women, and that attraction is used by agents.

"Let’s not kid ourselves," Meredith said. The attraction may not always be sexual, but simply curiosity, she said.

When it comes to sex, "you need to remove that off the table very quickly and clearly," she said. "Sometimes it’s 'Get your hands off my knee or I’m going to break it,' or you put as many people into the room as you can."

The CIA might seemed to enjoy the article, tweeting out a link to it from the agency's official Twitter account.
