China will only get involved with the Malaysian Airlines jet downing, which was allegedly done with a Russian missile given to Ukrainian rebels, if it starts to affect the Chinese in some way, says Stephen Yates, former deputy assistant for national security affairs for Vice President Dick Cheney.
"Only if there is real evidence to the Chinese leaders that this is costing them something" will the Chinese tell Russian President Vladimir Putin to back-off in Ukraine, Yates told Ed Berliner on "MidPoint" on
Newsmax TV on Wednesday.

"At this point it's mostly public relations," the CEO of D.C. International Advisory explained.
"If there is a significant fluctuation in the price of oil, that will be something that gets the Chinese leaders' attention greatly, but it's going to have to be something that's significant and over time.
"Absent that they tend not to go to Putin and other strong leaders and tell them how they should be doing things," he added.
In addition, the Chinese "also have some sympathy with what Putin is doing."
"They have revisionist territorial claims" as well, Yates added.
