Rep. Buddy Carter to Newsmax: Supreme Court Got La. Map Right

By    |   Thursday, 30 April 2026 08:22 AM EDT

The Supreme Court was correct to strike down Louisiana's congressional map, Rep. Buddy Carter, R-Ga., told Newsmax on Thursday.

Appearing on Newsmax's "Wake Up America," Carter praised the high court's Wednesday decision as a return to the original intent of the Voting Rights Act, arguing that the law has been misapplied in recent years to justify race-based districting.

"I think the Supreme Court got this right, and I applaud their decision," Carter said.

"The original intent of the Voting Rights Act was to prevent discrimination. What has happened since that time is that it's just been the opposite."

Carter pushed back on criticism from Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., who called the ruling a threat to democracy and to minority representation.

"The Dems just don't get it," Carter said. "This is not a decision based on discrimination — it's about preventing discrimination. They're trying to identify political party by the color of your skin, and you can't do that. That's not the America we live in today. The Constitution is colorblind."

The ruling is expected to have ripple effects across Southern states, where redistricting battles have intensified in recent years.

However, Carter suggested Georgia is unlikely to revisit its congressional maps in the near term.

"I think they'll probably undertake it for 2028," he said, noting that the state legislature has already adjourned its session.

While a special session is possible, Carter said lawmakers may prefer to avoid multiple sessions unless necessary.

Shifting to Washington, Carter also weighed in on the House's narrow 215-211 vote to pass a Senate-approved budget resolution, a move that helps end the Democrats' partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security and sets the stage for Senate reconciliation.

"I do think we're going to get this reconciliation bill done, and I'm glad," Carter said.

He emphasized that DHS encompasses far more than immigration enforcement, highlighting the role of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, particularly in South Georgia, which has recently faced wildfires.

"People think it's just ICE. It's not," Carter said. "DHS also covers FEMA. We've had ravaging wildfires, and we need FEMA right now."

Carter accused Democrats of using the funding fight to advance a broader political agenda.

"This is nothing more than the Democrats once again trying to extend their 'defund the police' approach because they don't want to fund ICE," he said, adding that full funding for DHS is essential to ensure both national security and disaster response efforts remain intact.
