Bondi to Newsmax TV: Press Unfair In Coverage of Virus and Protesters

Former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi on Thursday defended the reopening of the state’s economy after a coronavirus lockdown, but said press coverage of the crisis has been “unfair.”

In an interview on Newsmax TV’s “The Chris Salcedo Show,” the Republican lawyer took issue with coverage not only of the COVID-19 crisis, but with the pillory of protesters of the virus-triggered lockdown of much of the nation’s economic engine.

“Of course they have’t been fair, or fair to the protesters” of the lockdown, she said of the media.

“The press has not been fair to President [Donald] Trump or the American people at all in this situation,” she maintained. “Reopening will depend on antibodies, rapid testing, PPE and a mass produced vaccine… All that can be done on a state by state basis.”

Though she hailed Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis for reopening Florida beaches for people to “exercise every day,” she was also critical that the move wasn’t enough.

“We do have go forward to reopening our hospitals for non-essential surgeries,” she said.

“Reopening is on a state by state basis,” she said. “We’re very blessed in Florida… [with} a safe, good, healthy economy.”

“Decisions are going to be made at a local level,” she said, adding, “Twenty states are opening. Florida is one of them… There are enough tests for every state [of the 20] to start Phase One.”
