The Senate's passing of a sweeping criminal justice reform bill that gives judges more discretion when sentencing some drug offenders and boosts prisoner rehabilitation efforts deserves high praise, former New York Police commissioner Bernie Kerik told Newsmax TV's Brett Winterble on Wednesday.

The House is expected to pass the bill this week, with President Donald Trump signing it soon thereafter.

Kerik told "The Brett Winterble Show" on Wednesday the reform is "really a benefit to the U.S. Prison system to thousands and thousands of families – and it's a betterment for communities."

Kerik stressed "you can't send people off to prison for 10, 15, 20 years, don't do anything for them, give them no incentives, give them no vocational skills, no programs, and then send them home and think that they're going to be better people."

This legislation changes that, added Kerik, who said he has been heavily involved in the process dating back to the administration of President Barack Obama.
