Bernie Kerik to Newsmax TV: Bombs Might Have Been 'Hoax'

(Newsmax TV's "The Brett Winterble Show")

Whoever sent the pipe bombs wanted them to "terrorize the general public" – not harm the target – because they were not set to detonate upon opening the package and none has detonated, former NYPD Commissioner Bernie Kerik told Newsmax TV.

"The trigger mechanisms for these types of IEDs, or pipe bombs, blasting devices, they would normally be hooked up to the opening of the package," Kerik told "The Brett Winterble Show." "Not one of these things have detonated, and several of these has been opened . . .

". . . I just find it difficult to believe that not one of these things, not one, has detonated. So, there's some suspicion there, on my part, that there may be something else behind this."

There are the obvious dots to connect to the targets of the bombs – President Donald Trump's political opponents – but the terror suspect never intended these to go off, they just wanted these to hit the mainstream media, he added.

"They obviously were crudely put together," Kerik said of the pipe bombs. "They don't look that professional, based on the photo I've seen, but I have to wonder at this point if we're looking at real devices, if we're looking at devices that are some kind of hoax or some kind of decoy device that's just sent out to create havoc and terrorize the general public."

As for the profile of this terrorist, Kerik can only guess it is a politically motivated one.

"The only profile I could more positively give is the political element behind this," Kerik told Winterble.

There have been as many as nine similar packages identified thus far, and the more devices found increase the odds of determining a suspect within the next 48 hours, especially because some were hand delivered, Kerik said.

Investigators will use forensic science and likely video footage, as is common with these cases, Kerik said.
