Rep. D'Esposito to Newsmax: 'Bizarro World' Under Mayorkas

By    |   Saturday, 22 April 2023 06:17 PM EDT

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has no plans for changing course when it comes to the nation's troubled border situation, and it's time to replace him, Rep. Anthony D'Esposito said on Newsmax Saturday.

"He should be waking up, protecting and serving, and defending our homeland; and he's not doing it," the New York Republican said on Newsmax's "The Count," adding that Democrats are focusing on climate change rather than the problems of illegal narcotics and how Customs and Border Patrol agents are treated under Mayorkas' "lack of leadership."

"It's absolutely bizarro world, and Mayorkas made it clear that he has no intent on changing course, and he thinks that everything at the border is A-OK," D'Esposito said.

His comments come after Mayorkas's testimony before the House Homeland Security Committee this past week, where he claimed that U.S. southern border with Mexico is secure.

"What this is all about is about getting there, rolling up your sleeves, and putting the people's work first. And Alejandro Mayorkas has done a terrible job," said D'Esposito. "When you take an oath, you need to go out there and live that oath. You need to. You know, as I told him in the hearing every day, he should be waking up, protecting and serving, and defending our homeland, and he's not doing it."

The congressman added that Mayorkas also said to him that he "'views the control through a reasonable lens.'"

"My response to him was that his lens stinks," said D'Esposito. "It's very clear that there is no control at the border. And the thing that I think made me most angry is that, you know, he went there, and he's trying to talk about all the money that he wants for more Customs and Border Patrol agents."

But D'Esposito said he's spoken with agents and they "don't want to work for Mayorkas."

"It's not that they want to leave because they hate the job," he said. "They want to leave because they hate their so-called leader. You know there's nothing worse as a member of law enforcement when you know that your leadership doesn't have your back. We saw it in New York City. We saw it in blue states and blue cities throughout this country, and that's the reason why enforcement is, you know, that they're under siege."

Such treatment of law enforcement officers, D'Esposito said, is what's leading to "record retirements in law enforcement across the country."
