In the weeks after the September 11th terrorist attacks, there was an explosion of rage-filled attacks against Muslims and other minorities. Among them was a rampage initiated by Mark Stroman, a 31-year-old avowed white supremacist, who shot dead two people in a convenience store and partially blinded a third — immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India. He was arrested as authorities say he plotted to massacre dozens of Muslim worshipers at a Dallas Mosque, and in 2002 was convicted and sentenced to death.
But then there was an unthinkable development. Raisuddin "Rais" Bhuiyan, the Bangladeshi American who was partially blinded by Stroman, emerged to file an appeal with the court to save his shooter from the death penalty and started an online petition for mercy.
"I'm trying to do my best not to allow the loss of another human life. I'll knock on every door possible,” Bhuiyan told MSNBC at the time. "In Islam it says that saving one human life is the same as saving the entire mankind. Since I forgave him, all those principles encouraged me to go even further, and stop his execution.”
But while Stroman would eventually be executed — telling authorities as he was strapped to the gurney, "God bless America. God bless everyone. Let's do this damn thing." — Bhuiyan founded a movement called “World Without Hate” in a bid to stop hate crimes through education.
“An Eye for an Eye,’’ directed by Israeli-born filmmaker Ilan Ziv, brings you Stroman's story from the attack until his execution and employs exclusive interviews, news footage, and photos. For seven years, Ziv met with Stroman on Texas’ infamous Death Row to get to the heart of the case.
It’s an extraordinary true story of hate, revenge, understanding, remorse, and redemption you won’t want to miss.
