Ammon Bundy's Lawyer: Holding Him in Jail Keeps Him From Aiding Defense

By    |   Thursday, 18 Feb 2016 09:10 PM

Lissa Casey, the lawyer for jailed rancher Ammon Bundy, tells Newsmax TV her client should not be held in jail before his trial because it makes him unable to properly assist in his defense.

Bundy is not a flight risk, as the federal government argues, she said, because he, like his father Cliven Bundy, have had ample opportunity over the past several months to flee if they had such an intention.

Casey was a guest Thursday on "Dennis Michael Lynch: Unfiltered," where she told guest host Bill Tucker that Ammon Bundy wants to argue his case in the courts.

"He will run to this argument, not from it," she said.

The Bundys first came to the national spotlight in 2014 over a cattle grazing fees dispute with the Bureau of Land Management that resulted in an armed standoff with federal agents.

Ammon Bundy was initially in solitary confinement after his January 26 arrest when Bundy led the occupation of a building in an Oregon wildlife refuge. Newsmax's Lynch was credited by the family for Bundy's removal from solitary confinement after he featured his situation on his show.

But Casey said Thursday that any pre-trial detention at all prevents Bundy from assisting his legal team.

"It's difficult to assist in your own defense when you are in a cell," she said. "As people know, Ammon is an educator, he's an orator, he writes, and he likes talking to people about the Constitution and educating people about their rights. That's very difficult to do from a jail cell and it's very difficult to assist his attorneys in defending him."
