By    |   Wednesday, 23 July 2014 12:09 PM EDT

Americans may be suffering a combination of "terror fatigue" and complacency, a combination the country can ill afford during such tumultuous times, former naval intelligence officer Frank Wuco tells Newsmax TV.

"When we're feeling the most secure, that's sometimes when we have the tendency to become the most relaxed," he said on "America's Forum" on Wednesday.

He advised Americans to be more aware of what's happening domestically and around the world.

"I'll guarantee you that more people know about the current state of Honey Boo Boo and her mother than they do about the state of the American flags flying over prominent bridges in New York City," he said, referring to an incident at the Brooklyn Bridge where two American flags were replaced with two white ones. Authorities are investigating.
