Dershowitz: Obama Giving Iran 'Green Light' to Build Nukes

The Obama administration is putting Iran in the "driver's seat" in negotiations over Tehran's nuclear capabilities, walking on eggshells to ensure no proposals are made that the Iranians might reject because the White House believes "this deal is better than no deal," famed Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz said Tuesday on Newsmax TV's "America's Forum."

"We are seeing a horrible example of very bad negotiating on the part of the Obama administration," he said. "They seem to be giving up everything."

Dershowitz said he does not believe the administration's burning desire to reach a deal is motivated by "evil intention," but characterized them as "well-intentioned but naïve."

"They do want to keep American troops out of Iraq, of course, they are counting on the support of Iran to destroy ISIS, which is a big mistake," he said. "Iran needs us more than we need them to destroy ISIS.

"They do see some kind of a restructuring of the Middle East with the recognition of the power of Iran, but the end result will be a nuclear-weaponized Iran in 10 years and once they give them the green light to develop weapons in 10 years, essentially they are a nuclear power now and they will use their power to bully the Emirates, to bully Saudi Arabia, to bully Jordan. Everybody likes power and Iran is filling the vacuum that the U.S. is leaving in the Middle East."

He also defended Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to address the bipartisan U.S. Congress to convince it not to allow the U.S. to be manipulated by the Iranians. Netanyahu's address was just weeks before Israel's elections.

"[Netanyahu] has been focused on Iran since the day he became prime minster," said Dershowitz.

"I've known Netanyahu for over 40 years. He's a shrewd politician but he had to understand that this would at best be a tie for him when it came to domestic politics, it may even have set him back a bit. We don't know the answer to that, but I do not question his motive as trying to stop America from making a bad deal."
