Secret Service Shooting Near White House Prompts Lockdown

By    |   Monday, 04 May 2026 06:56 PM EDT

The White House was put on lockdown Monday afternoon after a Secret Service agent shot a suspect, but it was not believed to pose a direct threat to President Donald Trump.

"U.S. Secret Service personnel are on the scene of an officer-involved shooting at 15th Street and Independence Avenue in Washington, D.C.," the Secret Service said in a statement posted on X. "One individual was shot by law enforcement; their condition is currently unknown. Please avoid the area as emergency crews are responding."

Trump was at the White House at the time of the shooting, but his schedule was not disrupted, the Washington Examiner reported.

Secret Service Deputy Director Matthew Quinn said a plainclothes agent spotted a man with a "print," the outline of a concealed firearm, WUSA-TV reported.

The agent then called for backup. When uniformed officers arrived, the suspect fled. Police said he then drew his gun and began shooting at officers.

Secret Service officers returned fire and struck the man. He was taken to a local hospital, but officials did not provide an update on his condition, according to WUSA.

No officers were injured, and a weapon was recovered at the scene, an agency spokesperson said.

Quinn said a bystander was also shot. The bystander, a minor, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Quinn said he believed the bystander was shot by the suspect, but noted medical officials would make that determination.

The identities of the suspect and the bystander have not yet been released.

Vice President JD Vance's motorcade traveled through the same intersection moments before the shooting took place.

However, Quinn said that the suspect did not make any moves toward the motorcade or the White House, according to WUSA. He said the visible "print" of the gun was enough to raise alarms.

Journalists were on the North Lawn of the White House at the time of the shooting and were moved inside to the briefing room as a precaution, the White House press pool wrote on X.

Although Trump and those at the White House were not believed to be in immediate danger, the incident came amid heightened security concerns after a man was charged last week with attempting to assassinate Trump during the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner.
