Wells Fargo Office Pool Said to Win $543 Million Lottery Jackpot

Monday, 06 August 2018 08:18 AM EDT

Workers at a Wells Fargo & Co. branch in California just hit the jackpot.

A group of employees in San Jose won the $543 million Mega Millions jackpot late last month, according to a person with knowledge of the matter, who asked not to be named because the winners haven’t identified their employer publicly.

It’s the largest prize ever on a single-state ticket, the California Lottery said Friday, according to the Associated Press.

One member of the 11-person group was identified as Roland Reyes, who said he works in the financial industry. Brokerage industry records list a person by that name at Wells Fargo Clearing Services in San Jose. Reyes bought the ticket at Ernie’s Liquor, which gets a $1 million award for selling the winning stub.

Reyes told the AP that buying the ticket was “spur of the moment.” The group, which ranges in age from 21 to 60, decided to chip in $2 apiece as the size of the jackpot increased. His colleagues weren’t identified.

The group plans to keep their jobs, Reyes said. “We love that company,” he told the AP. “We love what we’ve built there. We have a good time and want to stay together.”

Reyes didn’t respond to a message seeking comment left with a phone number under his name in public records.
