American voters are against a 70% tax on the wealthy and free college tuition, according to a new survey.

Key takeaways from the latest Quinnipiac University Poll:

  • 59% are opposed to a 70% tax rate on individual income higher than $10 million, with 36% in favor of it.
  • 60% support a yearly 2% tax on individual wealth that exceeds $50 million, while 34% are opposed to it.
  • 52% are against offering free tuition at all public colleges, while 45% support the idea.
  • If a new wealth tax were to be used to pay for free public college tuition, 54% are opposed to it and 41% are for it.
  • 57% are in favor of the government forgiving up to $50,000 in student loans for individuals living in households with an annual income of less than $250,000. 52% are opposed to it if a new wealth tax were to be used to pay for it.

"It's almost a tossup, but if a vote were taken on free public college, the educated guess is that it would go down," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.
