The family of the American tourist who died after being held in North Korea have filed a claim to the North Korean cargo ship seized in May by the United States, CNN reported Friday.

Otto Warmbier's family won at $500 million lawsuit against the North Korean government in December over his treatment. Warmbier was a college student when he visited North Korea in late December 2015, and was arrested and convicted on charges of stealing a propaganda poster from his hotel room.

The North Korean government returned him to the United States in June 2017, but he was in a vegetative state and died shortly afterward.

Since the North Korean government has never attempted to enter negotiations to pay the Warmbier family any of the money awarded it in the federal lawsuit, "the Warmbiers are left to chase down the assets of North Korea to recover what they can for the torture and death of their son at the hands of North Korea's dictator, who with 'his cronies, show(s) no regard for human life,'" the recent court filing reads.

"We are committed to holding North Korea accountable for the death of our son Otto, and will work tirelessly to seize North Korean assets wherever they may be found," Otto's parents, Fred and Cindy Warmbier, said in a prepared statement.

The United States and United Nations said sales of coal transported in the cargo ship, named the Wise Honest, was used to fund North Korea's nuclear program.
