Russian President Vladimir Putin's jet entered into NATO airspace without clearance Monday before his summit with President Donald Trump in Helskini, Finland, according to The New York Times.
Estonian authorities published a statement Tuesday regarding the trespass, saying Russia's A319 and IL-96 entered its airspace for about an hour in the Vaindloo Island region.
"Airplanes stayed in the airspace of Estonia for less than a minute," the statement read. "Airplane transponders were turned on, but no flight plan was provided. The aircraft did not have a radio contact with Estonian air traffic services."
Roland Murof, a spokesman for the Estonian military, told the Times the plane crossed about 1.5 nautical miles, or 1.7 miles, into Estonian territory.
"It's a long pattern that we've monitored throughout the years," he said. "Events [Monday] just showed on what level they were willing to carry this," Estonian military spokesman Roland Murof said, according to the Times.
"Most of these air border violations happen for only a minute, or two minutes maximum," Murof added. "[Monday's] event is characteristic of Russia's behavior."
