Mail Delivery Could Go to Three Days a Week

Thursday, 21 July 2011 07:43 AM EDT

The financial woes of the U.S. Postal service could prompt mail delivery to tfo to three times a week and end Saturday mail delivery altogether within 15 years, Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said.

USA Today reports that Donahoe's forecast is based on a projected $8.3 billion loss this year as the drift from paper to electronic communication hammers the Postal Service. The worst of the Service's debt is the a $5.5 billion payment due Sept. 30 to cover future retirees' health benefits.

The Postal Service has had six-day a week mail since the 19th century. Donahoe wasn't sure how soon delivery reductions would happen but asmits Congress -- in a budget-cutting mode -- is more open to trimming.

The Postal Service estimates the move would save $3.1 billion a year.

Donahoe said the idea has "a much better chance today than a year ago. I don't know if I'd say 'likely' yet."
