Tense Turns in Freeing US Captives in North Korea

Sunday, 16 November 2014 11:06 AM EST

The U.S. official who brought two American prisoners home from North Korea a week ago has filled in some details of the secret mission.

National Intelligence Director James Clapper describes an uncomfortable dinner with North Korean officials who wanted a diplomatic concession from the U.S. in return for freeing Kenneth Bae (bay) and Matthew Miller.

Clapper could only offer a short letter from President Barack Obama. It characterized North Korea's willingness to release the pair as a positive gesture.

Clapper tells CBS's "Face the Nation" that he didn't know his mission would succeed until he was ushered into a hotel room for what he called an "amnesty-granting ceremony."

After handshakes and a change of clothes for the detainees, the Americans were soon on their way home.
