United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley said Thursday "all scenarios are on the table – so it really is up to North Korea" on provoking further action from the United States over its nuclear and missile activities.
"Based on what North Korea does, we have a plan for every one of those scenarios," Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, told Jake Tapper on CNN in an interview.
"What we have tried to say to North Korea is, 'We're not looking to pick a fight, but don't give us a reason to have one.'
"It's now up to North Korea."
President Donald Trump told Reuters late Thursday a "major, major" conflict with Pyongyang was possible over its weapons programs but that he would prefer a diplomatic solution to the dispute.
"There is a chance that we could end up having a major, major conflict with North Korea," Trump said. "Absolutely.
"We'd love to solve things diplomatically, but it's very difficult," he said.
Both Trump and Haley praised the efforts of Chinese President Xi Jinping in pressuring North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un in curbing his nuclear ambitions.
"We have seen unprecedented great partnership with China in the fact that they have really put the pressure on North Korea," Haley told Tapper. "We're encouraging them to continue the pressure on North Korea, because that is one country that can get them to move."
