Twitter is weighing a new feature to label tweets that violate company guidelines, but are not inclined to be taken down because they are "newsworthy," according to reports.
The head of legal, policy, and trust and safety at Twitter, Vijaya Gadde, said the tweets for public figures, up to and including President Donald Trump, that in violation of policy but are not taken down will be annotated with Twitter's reasoning.
"One of the things we're working really closely on with our product and engineering folks is, 'How can we label that?'" Gadde said at an event held by The Washington Post. "How can we put some context around it so people are aware that that content is actually a violation of our rules and it is serving a particular purpose in remaining on the platform?"
Gadde was responding to a suggestion Twitter is allowing President Trump to get away with violations of Twitter guidelines because he is a public figure, and Twitter policy does permit tweets from politicians to stay up as matter of public debate.
"When we leave that content on the platform, there's no context around that and it just lives on Twitter and people can see it, and they just assume that is the type of content or behavior that's allowed by our rules," she said at the event.
Twitter will censor tweets of a violent nature or targeting harm to someone, though, she said.
"There is absolutely a line of a type of content, an example being a direct, violent threat against an individual that we wouldn't leave on the platform because of the danger it poses to that individual," Gadde said. "But, there are other types of content that we believe are newsworthy or in the public interest that people may want to have a conversation around."
The news comes one week after Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., has announced a $250 million lawsuit against Twitter for shadow banning conservatives and meddling in our elections.
