A military coup appears to be underway in Turkey against the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The Turkish military has seized the offices of Turkish Radio and Television (TRT), the country's national public broadcaster, where an explosion was recently heard according to CNN.
The Turkish military has issued statements claiming it has "fully seized control of Turkey" to maintain democratic order.
Whether that has happened, however, is still unclear.
Turkey's Anadolu agency quoted Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim as saying: 'Those who are doing this will be punished in the hardest way.'
Erdogan's whereabouts are not known, however he addressed the nation on Facetime, through his smartphone saying: "I am still the President!"
Military jets have been seen flying low over Istanbul and Ankara and traffic on the main bridges in Istanbul have been closed
As news broke about the coup attempt in Turkey, Secretary of State John Kerry said he was following updates.
"I don't have any details at this time," he said. "I hope there will be stability and peace and continuity within Turkey. But I have nothing to add with respect to what has transpired at this moment."
