President Donald Trump has increased the intensity of his tweets against the Russia investigation because he fears the special counsel is putting the squeeze on his son Don Jr., sources told Vanity Fair's Gabriel Sherman.
Trump has become especially rattled since White House counsel Don McGahn's lengthy talks with Robert Mueller, Sherman reported.
Don Jr.'s lawyer refused to comment on the theory, according to Vanity Fair. However, another source briefed on the probe said that although the Mueller team continues to ask for documents, he disputes the term "squeeze."
Trump has been described as having a "total meltdown" and "extremely frustrated" by those close to him, with one former West Wing official saying that the president is especially concerned because McGahn kept notes of every meeting he had with Trump.
Another Trump ally said the president’s frustrations explain why he has been lashing out so frequently on Twitter, because "he's got to frame the narrative. He thinks the media is like a shark: you’re either feeding it or it eats you."
Trump continues to direct his anger at Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who has refused to resign, with one adviser saying the president slams Sessions in every conversation.
Trump's rage, according to the sources, has also spilled over to one of his fiercest defenders, his lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who Trump has started to blame for the entire Russian investigation.
One of those describing the conversation said Trump yelled at him loudly, "It's your fault! I offered you attorney general, but you insisted on being secretary of state. Had I picked you none of this would be happening."
