Legal Attacks Bog Down Trump Immigration Policy

The Trump administration has been hit with a series of legal setbacks in the past few weeks over its attempts to dramatically change the nation's immigration policy, The Hill reported on Wednesday.

The latest attack challenging the administration's policies is from advocacy groups vowing to sue over a policy revealed Monday that would expand deportation authorities for undocumented immigrants.

This comes after a federal district judge in California last month blocked the administration from using military funds to build a wall on the border with Mexico. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals refused to lift the injunction while the full order is appealed, finding that organizations challenging the administration are likely to succeed on their claims.

The Supreme Court is expected to issue a decision in the coming days over the administration's request for an emergency stay on the lower court rulings so that officials can begin using the Pentagon funding for the wall.

A frustrated Trump has increasingly turned to executive action to carry out his immigration agenda, especially asylum laws, as legislation on the issue has stalled out in a divided Congress.

A ruling is expected soon by a Trump-appointed judge on whether to grant a temporary restraining order to block the new asylum rule. Meanwhile, on Wednesday a federal judge in San Francisco is expected to oversee a hearing on whether to grant the same request in a similar lawsuit challenging the rule.
