President Donald Trump used Twitter on Sunday to notify Congress of his intent to strike back hard against Iran if it decides to retaliate for the assassination of top Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani.
“These Media Posts will serve as notification to the United States Congress that should Iran strike any U.S. person or target, the United States will quickly & fully strike back, & perhaps in a disproportionate manner,” Trump wrote. “Such legal notice is not required, but is given nevertheless!”
The president’s tweet came after Democrats criticized the fact that he authorized the assassination of Soleimani without briefing top congressional officials beforehand, The Hill reported.
Some Democrats have also questioned why the killing was necessary at this time and if the administration properly considered all the consequences of carrying out such a strike.
Since the assassination of Soleimani, Trump has sent out several other tweets warning Iran of a harsh response if it decides to carry out attacks against Americans.
