Billionaire environmentalist and Democrat Tom Steyer on Monday kicked off a $25 million push to inspire young Americans to vote in the November elections.
Steyer's NextGen Climate Action super PAC has its sights set on 200 college campuses across seven states as part of the effort.
"We think that the 2016 election is likely to offer the starkest contrast between presidential candidates that's been offered for many decades," Steyer said Monday, according to
USA Today.
"This generation of young people is super smart, passionate and highly moral. What they haven't been is as engaged in the electoral process as older Americans."
The seven states that are part of the program are Pennsylvania, Iowa, Ohio, New Hampshire, Nevada, Illinois, and Colorado.
Democrat candidate for president Bernie Sanders
has a strong base of support in the younger generation, which has helped carry his campaign — although he trails Hillary Clinton in delegate votes, 1,941 to 1,191.
Steyer, whose net worth
according to Forbes is $1.61 billion, has donated millions of dollars over the years to political campaigns, environmental causes, and other groups.
He reportedly forked over $71.9 million on the 2014 midterm elections.
Politico reported in early April that NextGen Climate Action will not provide financial support to Democrats who supported the Keystone XL oil pipeline.
