Former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw took a swipe at President Donald Trump by comparing him to a fictional captain of a ship whose crew removed him via a mutiny.

Brokaw tweeted this Thursday night, shortly after it was announced that Secretary of Defense James Mattis would resign:

"Pres. Trump getting rid of Gen. Mattis is like the captain of a sinking ship firing the coast guard. This is a time for all hands to be on deck — whatever their party label — and confront captain queeg, er, President Trump."

Captain Queeg was the fictional commander of a Naval ship in the 1951 novel "The Caine Mutiny." He was relieved of his duties by subordinates after he was accused of making irrational decisions.

Mattis said he is resigning because of differences of opinion he has with Trump. The move promoted many lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to express concern over the administration's loss of the retired Marine Corps general.
