Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., said Tuesday that President Donald Trump’s “insecurities” about former President Barack Obama are driving his fight against the Affordable Care Act.
“The president will say anything, but his actions tell you what’s up. From the very first day in office, his main goal is to get rid of Obamacare primarily because of his insecurities of President Obama. He just wants to get rid of it,” Kaine, who was former Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s running mate in 2016, said on CNN’s “New Day” Tuesday morning.
“They’ll get rid of it with no plan in place. They still don’t have a plan. After so many years, they still don’t have a plan, but the action that they’re taking in court would strip health insurance away from millions. … He wants to get rid of health insurance for millions, we want to expand it to millions more,” the senator added.
Kaine added that he plans to unveil a healthcare plan called “Medicare X” to create a single-payer system for those who want it, but would also allow people to retain the insurance provided by their employer if they choose.
The Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services “needn’t collect a profit, they don’t have to return to shareholders,” he said. “The cost of this nonprofit insurance policy would be dramatically less than for-profit insurance.”
