President Donald Trump’s tweet to commemorate the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks drew harsh criticism from many Twitter users, who bashed the president for his invitation to the Taliban to conduct negotiations at Camp David and his history of making insensitive and untruthful statements about 9/11, HuffPost reported on Wednesday.
What appeared to spark the anger was that Trump, in his tweet, shared a photograph of himself and first lady Melania Trump with their backs to the camera, and the caption: “We Will Never Forget.”
Attorney George Conway, the husband of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway and a frequent critic of the president, captured the spirit of many responses on Twitter by writing, "Except when we invited the Taliban over for a photo op."
Other tweets concentrated on the numerous false statements Trump has made about the day in an attempt to make himself look better or seeking political gain.
In what many consider an insensitive and unimportant statement even if it was true, Trump falsely boasted that one of his buildings had become the tallest in downtown Manhattan following the collapse of the World Trade Center, according to HuffPost.
Trump also has made baseless claims that "thousands" of Muslims in New Jersey celebrated the attacks. The president also has falsely stated that he “spent a lot of time” with first responders at Ground Zero.
