A new survey from the conservative think tank American Compass shows that Americans are broadly skeptical of globalization and increased trade with China.
American Compass asked respondents the same question, but half were asked about "globalization" and the emphasis on trade and investment between the U.S. and the world, and the other half were asked about "China" and investment and trade specifically with China.
- 41% said embracing globalization and trade with China has benefited Americans, and 28% said Americans have suffered.
- 47% said that the nation has suffered from embracing globalization and trade with China, and 33% said the country has benefited.
When broken down by income group, American Compass found that lower, working, and middle-class respondents were more likely to say the nation has suffered, while upper-class respondents were more likely to say that the country has benefited. Middle and upper-class respondents were also much more likely to say they had personally benefited from globalization or trade with China than those in the lower or working class.
The poll also found that most Americans view China as either "a rival" or as "an enemy," with just over one in five viewing the country as "a partner" or as "a potential ally."
- 40% said China is "a rival."
- 29% said China is "an enemy."
- 6% said China is "a partner."
- 15% said China is "a potential ally."
- 11% said China is none of the above.
YouGov conducted the American Compass Globalization Survey from Nov. 21-28, 2023, among 1,000 Americans with no margin of error given.
