Presuming all cultures are equal devalues the "founding fathers," Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, said at a Webster County, Iowa town hall, USA Today reported Wednesday.
"If we presume that every culture is equal and has an equal amount to contribute to our civilization, then we're devaluing the contributions of the people that laid the foundation for America and that's our founding fathers," Rep. King reportedly said. "It is not about race, it's never been about race. It is about culture."
King's alleged connections to white nationalist groups have led politicians and groups in both parties to disavow him. He has repeatedly caused uproars over comments about Western and non-Western civilizations. Following such comments to The New York Times earlier this year, which King said were misinterpreted, Republican leadership stripped him of committee assignments
King said this week he said he is making progress in gaining back his committee seats and fighting against what he called a "political lynch mob."
Last month King said he can relate to the suffering of Jesus Christ, according to The Des Moines Register.
"When I have to step down to the floor of the House of Representative and look up at those 400-and-some accusers – you know we just passed through Easter and Christ's passion – and I have better insight into what He went through for us, partly because of that experience," he said.
