When President Donald Trump steps up to the podium at 9 p.m. ET to deliver Tuesday’s State of the Union Message, there will be just 10 days left on the calendar before a deadline triggers another federal shutdown over the border wall.

The president has already stated there is a “good chance” he will declare a state of emergency, given the current deadlock. Such a declaration would almost certainly touch off a political firestorm in both parties, analysts say.
