Multiple people have suffered stab wounds at a rally at the California State Capitol building attended by a group of counter-protesters.
Seven people were transported to area hospitals after the "mass casualty incident," some with critical trauma stab wounds, Sacramento Fire Department spokesman Chris Harvey told Fox News Channel.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the event was planned by a neo-Nazi group and that counter-protesters had been organizing online. Frances Wang of ABC 10 reported that more counter-protesters than rally-goers were expected.
Sacramento Fire Department spokesman Chris Harvey said a rally by the Ku Klux Klan and other right-wing extremists groups turned violent Sunday when they were met by counterprotesters.
He said a large fight broke out after people carrying sticks rushed into the area where the rally was being held.
Harvey said California Highway Patrol officers managed to break up the large fight
Officer Matt McPhail with the Sacramento Police Department said none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening. The victims were all present while a protest took place, though McPhail said it was still unclear whether and how they were involved.
The Traditionalist Workers Party had scheduled and received a permit to protest at noon Sunday in front of the Capitol. McPhail said a group of counter-protesters showed up to demonstrate against them.
The Southern Poverty Law Center has described TWP as a group formed in 2015 as the political wing of the Traditionalist Youth Network, which aims to "indoctrinate high school and college students into white nationalism."
Fox 40 News reporter Sara Zendehnam said the original rally never started because it was canceled, but as individual rally-goers showed up they would be attacked by counter-protesters.
