A college student is facing the threat of expulsion after posting copies of a professor’s email that called out conservative students as "evil."
The College Fix reports that Siena College student Zack Butler is under investigation for allegedly violating the school’s code of conduct.
According to a Change.org petition launched on Butler’s behalf, on March 20, 2018, philosophy professor Jennifer McErlean "directed an email towards a politically active conservative student …
"In this email, McErlean discriminates against conservative students on campus. She says that the thought of working with them ‘makes [her] miserable.’ McErlean targets and out right names [the student] Bianchi and another conservative student … for her op-ed pieces in the student newspaper."
The petition, which has been signed by nearly 500 people, adds: "We have the right to express our opinions/beliefs. No student should be treated differently because of their political values."
Butler said it was "ironic" that Siena believes his posting of McErlean’s remarks are "more damaging to the reputation of institution than the content of the email itself."
McErlean did not respond to The College Fix’s request for a comment. A school spokesperson told The College Fix that the school "cannot offer any comment on a student matter" due to privacy laws, but insisted the school is "committed to respecting academic freedom."
