Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., on Tuesday blasted President Donald Trump for using "his father's connections to lie about bone spurs" to avoid serving in the military during the Vietnam War.
Moulton, who served four tours of duty in Iraq, appeared on Fox News on Tuesday where "America's Newsroom" co-anchor Sandra Smith asked him how he would defeat Trump if he wins the Democratic nomination for president.
"You have to be willing to challenge him where he is weakest: his performance, not just as president, but as commander-in-chief . . . this is a president who used his father's connections to lie about bone spurs to get out of serving in a war," Rep. Moulton said. "Think about that compared to [former President] John F. Kennedy, who used his father's connections to get medically cleared to serve in World War II."
The New York Times reported in December 2018 that two daughters of a former podiatrist based in New York diagnosed Trump as a favor to his father, Fred Trump, who was the doctor's landlord. Trump received five draft deferments during the Vietnam War, four education deferments during his time in school and one medical deferment after his graduation.
The congressman added later he is the only 2020 candidate that is "challenging him [Trump] on national security and performance as commander-in-chief, and I think it's important in this election."
