Staffers for the Senate GOP campaign arm gained unauthorized access to the computer system of the House Republican campaign committee and seized data on about 200,000 donors, Politico is reporting.
The website attributed its information to three sources with knowledge of the breach and said it occurred over several months.
The National Republican Congressional Committee is said to be furious over the National Republican Senatorial Committee's intrusion, according to the Politico sources.
The action came as Senate Republicans continue to struggle with fundraising, according to the website. It claimed the NRSC has spent more than it has brought for the last four months.
In the first six months of 2017, an average of $4.6 million was raised by the NRSC, according to Mother Jones. Since July, it has raised an average of $2.1 million.
Meanwhile, the NRCC has raised more than $77 million this year, Politico reported.
The list of donors breached contains home phone numbers, email addresses and summary of past donations — details that could be used to convince them to make additional contributions.
"This is utter nonsense. The NRSC and the NRCC has a close working relationship and at the end of the day, our shared goal is growing our majorities for years to come," NRSC Executive Director Chris Hansen said.
And NRCC Executive Director John Rogers said: "Chris Hansen is one of the most trustworthy people I have met in politics. If he says something I am going to believe him. We meet regularly and share as much information as the law allows. We are both committed to helping each other grow our respective majorities.
But according to Politico some NRSC staffers had previously work for the NRCC. And the website said they used old login information to gain access to the donor lists.
One source told Politico the NRCC has been aware of the attack since October.
"Everyone steals lists, but the fact that they did this behind the back of the NRCC shows they knew they were doing something wrong," said a Republican fundraiser. "The people at the NRCC, who found out about this, are really pissed. They're supposed to be on the same team."
