Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., challenged a news story that claimed he tweeted "the most Republican part of the Bible," The Hill reported Sunday.

"Proverbs is the Republican part of the Bible? I don't think Solomon had yet joined the GOP when he wrote the first 29 chapters of Proverbs," Rubio said jokingly.

Joel Baden, a professor at Yale Divinity School, wrote the article published Sunday by Politico, titled "Marco Rubio is tweeting the most Republican part of the bible." He argued the Proverbs showed people how to live a righteous life with a system of rewards and punishments.

"Proverbs is notable in that is presents a fairly consistent view of the world: The righteous are rewarded, and the wicked are punished," Baden wrote. "In the understanding of Proverbs, everyone gets what is coming to them; behavior is directly linked to reward or punishment."

Baden also suggested Rubio's views could affect his work as a lawmaker and pointed to several tweets he had posted since May that referenced Proverbs.

"This worldview has social consequences: Those who succeed in life must be more righteous than those who struggle," he wrote.

Rubio tweeted Wednesday, “They will die from lack of discipline, lost because of their great follow Proverbs 5:23,” which the article used as an example.

On Saturday, Rubio tweeted, "The beginning of wisdom is fear of the LORD, & knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Proverbs 9:10"

Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., defended Rubio, tweeting, "The Bible is not Republican nor Democrat. It's so much greater than any political party... it's inspired by God. (2 Timothy 3:16)"
