Rep. Sean Duffy, R-Wis., said the Democrats know if they win the fight over the border wall they will emerge victorious in 2020.
Duffy made his comments Tuesday on the Fox Business Network’s “Lou Dobbs Tonight."
“Democrats are fighting so hard on this because they know if they win on the border wall, they win in 2020,” he said. “And I think Donald Trump knows if he loses on this, he has a hard time winning in 2020. There is so much at stake.”
Duffy said he thinks the conference committee will fail to reach a deal on border security.
“I don’t think you’re going to get a deal out of this conference committee,” he said. “I don’t think you’re going to see that. So, what’s going to happen is, you’re going to come into Feb. 15 and the president has to hold firm here and say: ‘Listen, this thing is going to get shut down again.'"
And Duffy said if Trump declares a national emergency to get the funds to build the wall, the courts will likely overturn his decision.
Trump had tweeted Wednesday morning before the conference committee was scheduled to meet that the group of Republicans and Democrats is "wasting their time" if they aren't "discussing or contemplating a wall or physical barrier."
