Former U.S. Navy SEAL Robert J. O'Neill, who takes credit for firing the shots that killed Osama bin Laden, says President Donald Trump's idea of holding a military parade is a bad idea.
Trump got the idea of holding a large military parade after visiting France, where he witnessed the annual Bastille Day Parade.
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders issued a statement Tuesday explaining the president's position.
"President Trump is incredibly supportive of America's great service members who risk their lives every day to keep our country safe," Sanders said. "He has asked the Department of Defense to explore a celebration at which Americans can show their appreciation."
O'Neill later sent out a tweet explaining his "third world" comment.
The parade idea has largely gotten poor reviews from lawmakers and pundits, though Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said he would support a low-key event that honored the troops.
