There likely won't be any "bombshells" if special counsel Robert Mueller agrees to testify before Congress in connection with his report, but the case is not closed now that the investigation has been completed, Sen. Angus King said Tuesday.
"I think the American people need the facts," the Maine independent senator told CNN's "New Day." "They are going to have to make a decision in 2020 about whether they want to continue this presidency and in order to do that they need the information and I think Robert Mueller's testimony would be important, although I think nobody should expect any bombshells."
Mueller won't say anything any different than what's in his report, King continued, but he does think it will be useful to hear from him and to set the record straight about Attorney General William Barr's summary of the document.
"I don't think people should expect, you know, that there's going to be some great new smoking gun that's going to change the course of this," said King.
The senator also Tuesday said he thinks the United States is on a "dangerous course" with its decision to send a carrier group to the Persian Gulf to warn Iran away from making any kind of attacks on the United States or its interests.
"Clearly they are a malicious actor and have Hezbollah in Lebanon and they are affiliated with Hamas," said King. "I'm not saying they are good guys, by any means, but the question is are we taking steps that are going to lead us toward a war or, you know, a real conflict that is dangerous?"
