Democrats should wait months before deciding whether to impeach President Donald Trump, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Tuesday, the Washington Examiner reported.
“We don’t know all of it yet and the more new facts come out the better informed decision the American people and then the Congress can make on this issue,” Schumer said. "So I think the strategy of getting as much of the facts out and then months down the road making a decision on impeachment... is the right strategy.”
Schumer's stance on impeachment appears to support the view of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has refused to back impeachment while trying to exert control of the party on the issue.
However, the number of Democrats announcing that they are in favor of impeaching Trump is increasing.
Sixty-two House Democrats, which is more than a quarter of the caucus, have declared that they are in favor of either impeaching Trump or starting a probe into the matter, according to The Hill.
The most recent Democrat to declare support for impeaching Trump is California Rep. Katie Porter.
She posted a video to Twitter on Monday night in which she said that after careful consideration she came to the conclusion that Congress must continue the work of special counsel Robert Mueller.
She emphasized that Mueller made it clear in his report that he did not have the option to indict the president and that it was up to Congress to consider it because he was also not able to come to the conclusion that Trump should be exonerated.
