Saudi Arabia Considers Executing Gays Who Come Out Online

Thursday, 07 April 2016 10:19 AM EDT

Officials in Saudi Arabia, where gay sex is a capital offense, are reportedly weighing whether to now impose the death penalty against coming out online.

According to Vocativ, which cites a report in Arabic in the newspaper Okaz, the proposal comes amid news of 35 prosecutions in Jeddah for homosexuality and "sexual perversions" over the last six months.

The officials say the number is higher than usual, and cite the increased use of social media by members of the LGBT community as the reason, Vocativ reports.

A Saudi man can be beheaded for sex with another male, but other gay-related crimes traditionally carry less severe punishments, Vocativ reports.
