White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders Thursday echoed President Donald Trump's criticism of the media following bomb scares that have targeted several foes of the right-wing in the past two days, commenting that the media "has a role to play" in the process of ending division.
"When 90 percent of the coverage about this president is negative, despite the historic successes, when ideas are perpetuated of a continued negativity, it is not helpful for the American discourse," Sanders told Fox News' "Fox and Friends," shortly after Trump in a tweet said the "mainstream media must clean up its act fast."
While Trump called for a more civil tone while speaking at a rally in Wisconsin Wednesday, Sanders said he'll still be pointing out "contrasts of policy" between Democrats and Republicans, while still condemning violence and calling for unity.
Sanders noted that her own life has changed over the past several months.
"An MSNBC anchor said someone should wring my neck," she said. "A Washington Post columnist said I deserve a lifetime of harassment. I was the first White House press secretary in the history of the White House to have to have United States Secret Service. They don't do that because somebody said nasty things."
Sanders also slammed CNN worldwide president Jeff Zucker, who said Wednesday there is a "lack of understanding" about the effects of the Trump attacks on the media.
"I find it absolutely abhorrent and disgraceful," she said. "That type of activity is certainly not helpful, certainly not at this time."
