George Clooney and his attorney wife Amal are poised to charge "an obscene amount of money" through a fundraising dinner for Hillary Clinton while Americans are struggling to put dinner on the table, Bernie Sanders’s campaign complained Friday while lashing out at the front-runner for participating in the stars' plans.
“In the movie Oceans 11, a gang of lovable thieves successfully heist $150 million from a vault in the basement of the Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas,” Sanders’s campaign manager Jeff Weaver complained in an email to supporters, reports
The Hill.
"Fueled primarily from high-dollar donations, Hillary Clinton has raised more than that in this campaign, and is now enlisting the support of George Clooney (Danny Ocean) to pad that total at a dinner event that will cost people up to $353,400 to attend.”
The Clooneys are planning fundraisers in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and Clinton's campaign is having a contest to award a ticket for a donor, no matter how much they give, to meet the couple at an event at their Los Angeles home, reports
People Magazine.
But the actual price of admission to the fundraiser itself is "a sum that would require an employee making the federal minimum wage to work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, for more than 5 years,” Weaver said.
His email also contained a fundraising pitch, noting that the Sanders campaign relies on small donations, and said that the nation's wealthiest people "have never had it so good."
"The great question of this campaign is will we restore a vibrant democracy in this country, or will we slide into an oligarchy in which the economic and political life is controlled by a handful of billionaires?" said Weaver.
