The GOP should amend existing rules to guarantee that President Donald Trump becomes the presumptive party nominee in 2020, Republican National Committeeman for the Virgin Islands Jevon O.A. Williams said in an email sent to other RNC members, The Daily Caller reported on Wednesday.
Williams said the RNC needs to change “loopholes in the re-nomination campaign” at their winter meeting this month so that no Republican could run against Trump in the 2020 presidential campaign.
Williams sent the email soon after incoming GOP Sen. Mitt Romney wrote a scathing criticism of Trump.
“Imagine my surprise when I read the junior senator-elect from Utah’s unprecedented rebuke of President Donald J. Trump in a column on the pages of The Washington Post that ran before he was even sworn into office,” Williams said.
“I couldn’t believe this was coming from our party’s 2012 nominee, who, despite differences in politics, still professes to be a Republican. With Republicans like him who needs Democrats.”
While Republicans are confident that Trump would defeat a primary challenger, many worry the campaign would derail his re-election, according to the Washington Examiner.
Williams made that point, saying, “No Republican president opposed for re-nomination has ever won re-election” and that “any contested re-nomination campaign - even a forlorn hope - would only help Democrats.”
