President Donald Trump's 47 percent job approval rating, his highest since taking office, reflects improvements in the nation's economy, and his reaction to the caravan approaching the U.S. border will be a winning issue for the Republican Party in the upcoming midterm election, Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said Monday.
"The American people are looking at what's happening with our economy, with 3.7 unemployment the lowest since we put a man on the moon," McDaniel told Fox News' "America's Newsroom."
"People are doing better under President Trump and it's showing in these poll numbers."
Further, she said that Trump is handling the caravan matter "perfectly" when he tells other countries that he'll cut off foreign aid if they don't stop such migrations from taking place.
"We can't have this influx of 5,000 people into our country," said McDaniel. "We are a great country but we have to take care of the people who pay taxes, we have to do this in a safe way for American citizens."
The caravan also highlights Democrats' "very extreme" stances on immigration and the border, said McDaniel.
"Open borders, what does that mean for our country?" she said. "We need to have borders. We're a sovereign nation. This in the long term I think helps us in these elections."
However, historically the party that holds the White House loses Congressional seats in a president's first mid-term election, said McDaniel, but the numbers for Republicans are "looking better and better. "
"As we put the president on the campaign trail we're ramping up our enthusiasm and he is making the case to Republican voters," she said.
