Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., paid tribute on Friday to the 14 students and three adults who were shot and killed exactly two years ago at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Scott made his comments on Twitter. He wrote: "2 years ago 17 innocent lives were lost far too soon. Every day we honor the memories and remember the victims of the tragic shooting at Parkland and their families. Today, the state of Florida stands united with heavy hearts."

Students in classrooms throughout Broward County, where the high school is located, were let out early on Friday. Before leaving, many participated in a day of service in honor of those murdered Feb. 14, 2018, according to Local 10 News in South Florida.

The city of Parkland put together a service project at a local park. Art was to be displayed to commemorate the victims. Therapy dogs were scheduled to be on hand to provide support.

Gov. Ron DeSantis directed all state of Florida flags to be flown at half-staff.
