NSA leaker Reality Winner will plead not guilty to charges she leaked classified information to a reporter, her lawyer told NPR Wednesday.
Titus Nichols said Winner hopes to be released on bond Thursday.
Winner, a 25-year-old national government contractor based out of Augusta, Ga., was charged Monday with sending a classified report about Russia's interference in the 2016 election to a reporter at The Intercept.
The Justice Department announced the case against Winner about an hour after the Intercept published the document, a May 5 intelligence report from the NSA.
According to court documents, the reporter from The Intercept provided a hard copy of the document to an NSA contact in an attempt to verify it and also told that contact it was mailed from Augusta.
"There's not much to comment on right now as far as whether there is a connection between my client and Intercept," Nichols said. "I know that there is documents circulating on the Internet and everything else, but as far as concrete proof, we're just not at that stage, yet."
