NYPD's Kelly Says No Mayoral Candidates Sought Terror Briefing

Monday, 09 September 2013 11:15 AM EDT

New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said none of the city’s mayoral candidates has asked for a brief on terrorism threats.

The public should demand detailed answers from candidates on plans to protect New York at a time when the threat of terrorism is as great, if not greater, than before the World Trade Center was destroyed, Kelly said at a breakfast today.

"There are few questions more important than what the next mayor will do to protect the city from terrorism," Kelly said, at a breakfast sponsored by the Association for a Better New York and the Council on Foreign Relations Monday at the Hilton.

"What do the candidates have to say?," Kelly asked, one day before the mayoral primary and two days before the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on New York City."

"Will they devote the resources and manpower required for the task? Will they retain the programs and strategies that have kept the city safe, or do they have a different approach?"

"We simply don't know."

Kelly urged residents, business owners and the media to seek answers from the mayoral candidates, adding, "The public should demand detailed answers from the candidates about their plans to protect New York."
