Prince Harry said he tried to leave behind the British monarchy "privately" and with little fanfare but was prevented from doing so.
Harry, whose interview with Anderson Cooper will be shown on CBS' "60 Minutes" on Sunday, discussed events that led to him and wife Meghan to step back from royal life in early 2020 and move to the Southern California.
"Every single time I've tried to do it privately, there have been briefings and leakings and planting of stories against me and my wife," Harry told Cooper. "The family motto is, 'Never complain, never explain.' But it's just a motto."
Harry said palace officials use the British media to spread messages.
"They will feed, or have a conversation with the correspondent, and that correspondent will literally be spoon-fed information and write the story," Harry told Cooper. "At the bottom of it, they will say that they've reached out to Buckingham Palace for comment. But the whole story is Buckingham Palace commenting."
Harry said the palace's hypocrisy glared with its "silence" on his situation.
"When we're being told for the last six years 'we can't put a statement out to protect you', but you do it for other members of the family, there becomes a point when silence is betrayal," he said.
During another interview, with ITV, Harry said the deterioration of his relationships with his father, King Charles III and brother, Prince William, "never needed to be this way.”
"I would like to get my father back. I would like to get my brother back," he told ITV in an interview top be broadcast Sunday.
"I want a family, not an institution," said Harry, who added, "they've shown absolutely no willingness to reconcile."
Harry has been promoting his memoir, "Spare," which will be released Jan. 10.
The Duke of Sussex and his wife recently took part in the Netflix series "Harry & Meghan" in which they discussed their lives and their decision to leave behind royal life.
King Charles III succeeded his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, as the British monarch.
Harry married Meghan Markle, a biracial American actress, in 2018.
